Miners Loop Strikes Gold In Marmora & Lake
MARMORA & LAKE- Saturday August 4 might have been a hot and sticky day but it did not deter tourists and locals from embarking on the first ever Marmora & Lake‘Theory of the Earth’ Tour thanks to funding from Community Futures.
The tour was booked to capacity, with stops at four sites throughout the Municipality of Marmora & Lake. The first stop on the tour was at the historic Millside Park where tour guide Marc Forget explained the history of the Marmora Dam site and the similarities
between the Niagara Gorge and the Gorge located along the beautiful Crowe River in the Village of Marmora. As Forget talked about the historical significance of the site many tourists and locals alike were busy taking photos of natures beauty.
The tour continued to site number 2 where Forget led the group on a two km hike north on the Hastings Heritage Trail. Despite the heat, the hike was worth the educational experience Forget provided explaining multiple rock cycles throughout the exposed horizontal limestone beds. ATVers may take notice of a new blue and white sign located at this site along the EOTA trail.
After the two km hike south off the trail the tour bus headed to the old Deloro Mine Site. Despite not having access to the site itself, Forget explained the history of the mine site and answered engaging questions from tourists and residents curious about the former operation.
The final stop on the tour was the Marmoraton Mine Site along Highway 7. Tourists had many questions about the scenic mine site, and Forget even used some props to show the rising water level at the Mine site.
Economic Development Intern Lucas Wales said “Nearly half of the people on the tourwere from outside of our area, and by bringing tourists into the community that translates into positive economic outcomes for our businesses.’
Tour guide Marc Forget said “Through a survey conducted at the end of the tour we concluded that ‘Theory of the Earth’ was rated 4.3 out of 5, which is remarkable. 96% of respondents said they would recommend our tour to others.”
About: The Theory of the Earth Tour is a guided tour through the mining and geological history of the area. The tour continues after the Celebrate Marmora weekend as a self-guided adventure through history! Look for the Miners Loop signs in Marmora & Lake
