10 am Ontario’s Biodiversity: is Nature on the run? Mark Stabb, Central Ontario program director with the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) Private landowners contribute directly to nature conservation through short term actions and long term plans. Mark Stabb will show how this fits into the big picture of global biodiversity conservation, via the Ontario Biodiversity Strategy. He will also talk about the state of regional biodiversity, focusing on forests.
10:30 am – 11:15 am Break: exhibits and networking
11:15 am The Secret Life of the Forest, Michael Runtz one of Canada’s most highly respected naturalists, nature photographers, natural history authors and teachers. He will take us for a visual tour of the myriad of living things concealed in our familiar butmostly unknown forests.
12:15 pm Hot Lunch by Chef Nelson Bridger of The Batawa Grill
1:45 pm – 4:30 pm Field Walks or Indoor Sessions
Option A: Field Walks All outdoor walks leave from the Batawa Ski Hill. You can choose any two of the following 45 minute walks:
● Geology and Biology in the area: Todd Norris, management biologist OMNRF and David Webster Management†Biologist OMNRF and David Webster senior conservation geologist OMNRF.
● Forest Bathing: Ewa Bednarczuk, ecologist, Lower Trent Conservation
● Forest Management: Scott Brown, forestry Technician
Option B: Indoor Sessions
1:45 pm Botany in your Woodlot, Eleanor Thomson, Thomson Botanical Surveys and Ontario Field Botanists gives an illustrated photo talk about interesting and beautiful plants in your woodlot, plus rarities to watch out for.
2:30 pm The Green Legacy Program Rob Johnson, program manager of the largest municipal tree planting program in North America will speak about the many ways to utilize trees on the farm, the principles of permaculture, intercropping, silvo pasturing, and commercial varieties of fruit and nut trees.
