Although, there are good soils for growing asparagus in this area, because it is labour intensive and require skill and time there are not many people growing it for sale. Expert garlic growers Jack and Betty Ketcheson have retired and Sue Vanden Bosch of Willow Creek Farm has taken over their asparagus fields. Ann Vanden Heyden and her daughters grow asparagus at Wooler Dale Farm near Frankford. which they also sell from the farm gate. Both Sue and Ann say if the weather stays warm that they can start picking in early May. Carl Huffman, of Carl’s Counrty Corner is a little further north on Blessington Road, City of Belleville thinks his asparagus will be up a little later. Please call and check with them. Rhubarb comes up at this time too so do ask them about it.
