Gonzalo Wilson run Wilson Apiaries from their farm in the Thomasburg area. Gonzalo’s father Don Wilson has been a bee keeper for over 40 years in the area and Gonzalo and his brother Mark of Elfsong Apiaries have followed in his footsteps. The honey comes from clover and buckwheat depending on depending on the season. They have more than two hundred bee colonies – that’s more than six million bees.
The Wilsons use traditonal methods for extracting the honey, which doesn’t involve heating the honey. They also make it in small batches so they can distinquish the types of honey.
They make hand creams from bees wax and special oils, like olive oil or avocado oil, scented naturally with no added chemicals.
Diane and Gonzalo also grow flowers and vegetables and herbs, which they sell, with their honey and creams at the Kingston Farmers Market and at the Belleville Farmers Market. The first flowers are delphiniums, Canterbury bells and peonies. Next come the Asiatic and oriental lillies and then lots of different varieties of sunflowers, Then it is the turn of the gladiolis. Diane dries flowers and herbs and makes attractive arrangements.
