Quinte Conservation is pleased to announce that Conservation Ontario
will be distributing its “Groundwater: Ours to Protect” DVD across the
province. Quinte Conservation created the eight-minute DVD in
partnership with Loyalist College and is also distributing it to local
schools, libraries and environmental groups.
“We’re extremely pleased with the response we’ve had to this DVD,” says
Lucille Fragomeni, communications manager at Quinte Conservation.
“People can’t see groundwater and this gives us a way to show the public
visually how groundwater can be contaminated and how we can protect it.”
Nearly three million people in Ontario use and depend on groundwater
every day. Fragomeni adds, “Protecting our groundwater is vital to our
health, because this is the water that we drink. Let’s remember what
happened in Walkerton, Ontario in 2000. Seven people died and thousands
became sick because the water that they drank from their municipal well
was contaminated. ”
This DVD answers the questions: What is groundwater? How does it move
through the ground? How can it become contaminated? What can we do to
protect groundwater? It can also be viewed on Quinte Conservation’s
website at www.quinteconservation.ca. Conservation Ontario has ordered
an initial run of 1,000 copies.
In the Quinte region 51% of residents obtain their drinking water from
groundwater sources. More information about protecting drinking water
sources in the Quinte region is available at www.quintesourcewater.ca.
Quinte Conservation is a community based environmental protection agency
that serves 18 municipalities in the watersheds of the Moira, Napanee
and Salmon Rivers and Prince Edward County. It provides cost effective
environmental expertise and leadership that develops and delivers
programs to ensure the healthy coexistence between the community, the
environment and its economy.
